I don’t think liability insurance is a viable option. I think it’s a desperate talking point to bring the other side to the table because of the gun industry’s blatant obstruction of meaningful legislation and refusal to compromise.

I think no measure is going to discourage gun ownership for those who truly want one.

I actually support the second amendment and gun ownership, especially for hunters.

My personal preference would be a full on ban of assault rifles in the civil population. You don’t need a weapon of war to hunt or to protect yourself. No assault rifle is going to stop government overreach.

I would like to see more education around gun safety, so a requirement of taking a safety class, shooting proficiency type of thing would be good. I don’t want to get too specific here because I’m not claiming to be an expert, but getting licensed to drive isn’t taxed, it’s a one time fee to get one. I’m okay with that. It’s reasonable. Licensing a car is a yearly thing, and would probably be excessive. I’d want to hear more justification on that and have restrictions around it so that it doesn’t become onerous.

I’d also like to see storage options for people who own guns but find themselves with family members in crisis. Off site and putting them out of harm’s way without penalty or censure. Imagine, knowing what we know now, if Dylan Kleibold’s parents could have taken their firearms down to the local police station and have them put away for safekeeping once Dylan was placed under psychiatric care and medicated until he stabilized.

Along that vein, I’d like to see easier access to psychiatric evaluations or holds for people in crisis. I do recognize that’s a while different can of worms and needs to be tread very carefully.

I’d like to see efforts that are societal, not legislative, that would bring an end to this phenomenon. Even something as mild as peer counseling could work wonders to turn the tide.

At any rate, we’ve got to be willing to discuss and evaluate options. And we need to remember that any law that can be made can also be unmade. A law can be made with a time limit to see if it’s effective, otherwise it expires. It’s lunacy to continue this stalemate; the price of that obstinancy is blood. American blood.
