I didn’t get that. I don’t think things need always be so binary, or that every logical criticism of capitalism means the author is saying do away with capitalism. What’s wrong with diversifying the economy? More cooperatives and not-for-profits, etc.? Expanded social programs and more individual responsibility?
I agree with her about decoupling healthcare from employment. Even if it was a vast improvement from what was when we went down that road, it clearly no longer is and needs to be reimagined. I’m not necessarily advocating a national healthcare system either cobbler together with the remnants of what has become an exploitative and corrupt system. What would be the point? We’d just end up with something dysfunctional again.
You also alluded to socialism being inherently corrupt over capitalism because of too much government. And you mentioned Venezuela. But, we have that too — excessive govt interference only it’s on behalf of big money instead of the governmental machinations. Because politicians are funded by big money and are then obligated to them. We don’t have a free market. Not truly. Not when the big guys have so much control that they prevent the little guys from freely competing in the marketplace. People are kidding themselves if they think otherwise. Most big business are, in fact, welfare queens and dead beat dads.
Fact is, all govt systems require regulation to keep the balance of power balanced, otherwise it’s just a matter of time before someone tries to game the system and with each success the rest of us find ourselves on the wrong side of that particular see-saw.
Diversifying things out may lead to more overall stability, if not in absolute, then certainly for longer periods of time.
Imagine what we could accomplish as individuals, as families, as communities, as a society, and as a species then. Just imagine it.
