I actually agree with that to a great extent, as an adult.
As a teen, they were super important to most people, but I'm thinking that's mostly because of parental and school hype.
I actually had a good time at my senior prom, but that was only because a bunch of us showed for pictures to keep the parental units happy, thoroughly abused the staff for the lameness, and bugged out. We kind of did our own down by the river where we met up with all our friends from from other towns who had been so discourteously disinvited for no damn reason what-so-ever other than that certain Evangelical parents for a bug up their ass and pitched a holy fit at the school board meeting.
Typical Evangelical dick move.
Lot of those kids had already sprung for formal wear and you can't return that.
So yeah, my entire graduating class pretty much still has hard feelings about it.
And all these christian fundamentalists are over here now going after LGBTQ kids like they'll be seen as heroes in time. Nope. It ain't going to go down like that. The resentment is real and deep.
