I actually agree with Linz on this Gillian. This article wasn’t the place to compare abuse between white women and WOC. That topic certainly has a place and should definitely be explored, but putting it here the way you did just didn’t land right.
It’s not about my or her feelings as white women or being uncomfortable, it’s about how it’s going to be received by the broader readership, including men, who will read that and hedge bets of getting away with abusive behavior. They’ll then choose to only date WOC because they’ll be under the impression that doing so gives them a get out jail free card.
Police officers, prosecutors, others in the justice system (mostly male) may read words like yours and conclude that white women who report abuse are simply being whiners because statistics show they don’t have it as bad as WOC.
WOC may (and do) conclude they stand no chance of getting justice or assistance and never report in the first place, because, what’s the point?
That’s not really helpful either. It could be harmful.
So while I completely agree that justice disparity is something that needs to be fixed and is egregious, I think we need to be more mindful about how we go about it.
I hope you write more articles about that disparity because you’re a talented writer and you generally make well reasoned, passionate, and articulate points. That aspect of this article was a miss for me.
