Here's the deal about assassinations. Once that door is opened it opens for all. What goes around comes around. That's just not the sort of thing that can be done with impunity, especially after flapping your mouth about it.

Not only do you open the door for your political rivals to take you out, you open the door for your constituents to take you out; to correct a bad vote at the polls; to get revenge for not keeping your promises, etc. At this point, what's the purpose of your job? It's not to govern.

Still, although I KNOW this is straight up lunacy, I gotta admit there's a part of me that's thinking maybe some good old fashioned blood letting is what's needed to thin the ranks on both sides. Teach them the value of working together and compromise. Introduce them to the concept of good faith negotiation.
