I tell my daughter that you have to treat free speech with the mantra of Uncle Ben from Spiderman. “With great power comes great responsibility.” You can say whatever you want, pretty much, but you need to have a firm understanding about how what you’re saying will land, why you’re saying it in the first place, and what’s likely to happen once you do. If you’re good with the consequences of all of that, then carry on.

Another way of looking at it is to apply the principles of stoicism to free speech. Wisdom, JUSTICE, courage, and moderation. With wisdom being developed and applied by good sense, good calculation, quick wittedness, resourcefulness, and discretion.
