Good article and an excellent point.

Citizenship does require some ‘chores’ to keep it healthy and vital. Mindless performance of the rituals of citizenship with no thought behind why you’re doing it other than tradition can be more harmful than good.

I was thinking along these lines last night, after watching the impeachment proceedings. I was surprised to hear so many of the rioters speak about defending the Constitution. Shocked actually. Eyebrows relocated into my hairline levels of incredulity.

I have to wonder, if they had ever done more than blindly perform a staged act of patriotism as a chore of citizenship would they have realized that attempting to overturn a lawful and democratic election does not defend the Constitution. Would they have realized that had they been successful they would have destroyed it?

These fools think themselves patriots. They are not. They are anti-democratic usurpers. They are the barbarians at the gate.
