Good article. Though, for women assaults like this are very rare. Most attacks are from men you know or who have access to you. They're either coercive or part of sociopathic abuse patterns. Domestic violence, in other words, where one has been conditioned over time to accept the abuse while being deprived of a means out.
Sometimes there's a spate of political violence that affects women more harshly. It always does, it's part of the psychological trauma towards the whole group to go after the women.
Anyway, the vast majority of what you get on the street, is harassment, not assault. Catcalls, intrusions into space, stalking, drug, alcohol, or psychosis fueled verbal battery, come ons, creepy old man ("just being friendly. Can't you be nice back? Why won't you smile?") behavior, people trying to touch you when you're pregnant, people trying to convert you to their religion, etc.
Still, you make excellent points about safety. Particularly being armed and prepared to defend yourself at all times as well as not believing all the movie versions of how things will unfold.
