Ft Sumter's main claim to fame is that the first shot that kicked off the civil war was fired there.

The site dates back, for British purposes, to the War of 1812. The fort is built off the coast of Charleston and is located on a man made island. Today, of course, it's a tourist attraction.

I actually can't remember if it was built as a response to the War of 1812 because the British attack on Washington was by sea; the Capitol burned. Or, if there was some small engagement there while it was under construction. I'm thinking the former.

So now you know a little more American history.
