Except that science did not start with an extremist narrative. They started warning back decades ago about fossil fuels. The warnings have become more dire over the last 50 years as more research has been done.
Further, humans are just as vulnerable to extinction as any other species. Lots of things can cause an extinction event. We're not that special. Sometimes there are mass events where many species go extinct. Historically, there have been five that we have evidence for this n the fossil record. Most scientists are in agreement that we are at the beginning the 6th event now. Humans might survive it but they probably won't. Most apex species don't.
Lastly, even if humans survive, there's a difference between an environmental collapse and a civilization collapse. Civilizations rise and fall all the time. They have a lifespan. Western Civilization has decimated every other civilization it has come into contact with and it at the end of it's natural life span. It might be able to reorganize and continue on, but not like it has. And really, at what point of being forced to change does a civilization cease being what it was and start being something else? Western civilization either evolves or it perishes.
