Exactly. There’s legit gratitude, the emotion one feels in moments of peace and serenity. It’s good to be in that space as often as we can. It balances out our brain’s natural tendency toward focusing on negative thinking.
And then there’s weaponized gratitude which is a complete gaslight, as you stated in your article. Weaponized gratitude is a way of shaming people for their very real grievances. It’s a means of dodging accountability, continuing the status quo at your expense, and blaming you for feeling bad about your exploitation.
It’s emotional manipulation, plain and simple.
It’s hijacking someone’s emotional compass to subjugate them so you can continue to profit in some way. It’s selfish and it’s callous.
It needs to end. People need to know to not buy into that narrative, they need back up from the rest of us that they’re not crazy, and we all need to push back against this until it stops being a thing.
