Even other animals, and all the other great apes also participate in power exchanges. For example, amongst chimpanzees the leader of a troupe is not necessarily the biggest and the baddest. It the one with the largest network of supporters. Networking is an exchange of power. Bonobos will shun individuals who seek to exercise dominance over others.

Even amongst ants, leadership of the chuck wagon trail will automatically shift if there is a break in the line back to the hill.

In every social species you see shifts and exchanges of power given willingly under certain conditions. You also see group responses to check individuals who become power greedy.

It’s not as cut and dried or as simple as you make it out to be.
