Calvin was the worst. He tried to have a young girl he coerced (raped) into sex and got pregnant stoned to death for her sexual sin. I forgot where this was exactly, Stockholm or Geneva. He ended up getting tarred and feathered over it and run out of town.

He prosecuted a former classmate he had a grudge of entitlement against under charges of heresy. When the trial was over, he demanded the punishment (burning at the stake) be carried out with green wood! Spite execution.

He really was an all around jerk who’s Daddy bought him a place in the church and who kept bailing him out when he caused enough problems for a mob to form. Time and time again.

I’d always thought he was English. But I was reading about him recently in conjunction to that spite execution of Michael Servetus, and he wasn’t from Britain. He was actually French.

Like many of the era, he latinized his surname. He was actually born Jean Chauvin.

Yep. Can’t help but wonder about that, can you? It would be interesting to see if Derick Chauvin is a decendant of that family line.
