You live in grizzly bear country though.

I lived in black bear country. Black bears will turn around and walk away if you ask them politely. You really have to provoke them for them to attack you, either accidentally or on purpose.

I also lived in an area where there are lots poachers or people doing illicit things in those back woods. The random guy in the woods isn't the same as an average guy on the street going about his day. He's out of pocket, and most likely up to something.

That colors one's perceptions too.
