Both. I think they're genuinely surprised because of how ego works. We all like to feel like we're a "good" person. If you don't, it's almost impossible to navigate the woeld effectively.
Part of the manhood box is wrapped up in being a provider and protector. A hero, in other words. This is where #NotAllMen comes from; "yes there are loathsome individuals, but I'M not like that" I'm a good guy. How could I unfairly be lumped in with those guys? That's not fair."
I also think they know, deep down and they're mad thryre being confronted with it.
