Being from Tennessee, everyone always went on about the Hermitage. As Andrew Jackson’s residence, it is further distinguished as a Presidential home.
As a child, a field trip was being planned with that venue because people were getting tired of the Parthenon. It fell through for whatever reason and we went to the Parthenon again. I remember being relieved because I didn’t want to go to the Hermitage. Something about being in the space he lived was deeply unsettling to me as a child. To be fair, my disgust was more to do with the Trail of Tears than with slavery. I hadn’t made the connection yet between Plantations and slavery.
