All the best, most nuanced pieces take this view, that it was mutual abuse. Then there seems to be a mostly even split on reluctantly taking sides, maybe slightly skewed toward Johnny Depp.
The problem with most of the (general) people taking Depp's side is that they adopt the opinion that he is blameless. They rail on and on about her lies and manipulations while smoothly ignoring his. They see evidence and "proof" in speculation, they ignore eye witness accounts of him being violent. I could go on.
I tend to lean more toward Amber Heard. Not because I believe her blameless in the toxic spiral of their marriage bit becuse on the legal side of things, he needed to prove what she wrote is untrue. He failed to do that. As a civil suit, it only had to be credibly true not true without a reasonable doubt. Had he filed civil suit against her for battery, DV, assault, etc. it would be different and for the same reasons. It's credibly true that she abused him. The defamation suit was a mistake, in my opinion.
But, I guess now it's just wait and see what the jury says.
