Agreed. It really depends. I have several that are still part of my life but we've transitioned to friends. When you have kind of a niche interest, people to share that with may be few and far between.

Also, when you conduct yourself respectfully in the relationship, like and adult, and at equally open and honest and communicate well, sometimes you just realize you make better friends than anything else. So you switch.
