Abraham Lincoln fought for abolition because he saw that it was too problematic to have half the nation with one set of rules and the other half an alternate set. He even said in a debate with Stephen Douglas that the nation must decide the issue, one way or the other.
His choose the side of abolition because of the manner in which the institution of slavery impoverished poor, working class, non propertied white men and not because he believed in equality between the races. He did not. He dedicated an entire political tour to his view that blacks and white could never be equal.
His ultimate plan was set them up to recolonize parts of Africa, thereby emptying the country of blacks. In fact, the west African nation of Liberia was part of that attempt.
