A lot of this resonated. I'm not stunned so many people are surprised though. I don't think many people were unaware of the conservative fundamentalist push for abortion bans.
I think most people just never thought they'd be dumb enough to actually do it. For one, outside of elective abortions, abortions save lives. The bald fact of the matter is sometimes they are medically necessary. It's been common knowledge for millenia that pregnancy is dangerous. Modern medicine has reduced the danger yes, but not eliminated it. This is still very much common knowledge.
Politically speaking, when your entire platform or rallying political point is abortion bans, you jeopardize your own political party by achieving your goal. What reason do people have to rally behind you anymore? Yes, it sucks that women's bodies are the fodder of political parties.
It's also been proven time and time again that abortion bans don't work. You cannot police every woman. If she wants to abort, she will. It will just be unsafe for her now. Or, if the situation is desperate enough, she will kill herself and that fetus both rather than be forced to carry an unwanted fetus to term.
If you want to end abortions, expand birth control access, make it affordable, and hammer down on sex education with the young. That's what works. So many studies and programs worldwide have proven this is the path to successfully end most elective abortions time and time again. That fact has made the news and been published enough over the last half century, that again it's very common knowledge.
Taken altogether, it's easy to see how people would have thought they'd never be dumb enough to actually ban abortion. After all, conservative families benefit from safe and legal abortion too. Many a conservative family has been spared the loss of a mother and a wife from an ectopic or otherwise dangerous pregnancy. Many a conservative family have been spared the expense of medical care for a severely disabled child that they didn't have the resources to properly care for. Many a conservative family have been spared the shame of a pregnant teenage daughter, knocked up by the youth pastor, funny uncle, or by rape. Many a conservative family has been spared having to care for a baby because their son or daughter was ill educated to pander to their religious purity culture and behaved recklessly and irresponsibly due to ignorance. And on and on and on. Every reason imaginable, the same reason all those "murderous" liberals have for seeking an abortion.
It's not and never has been just liberal women seeking and getting abortions.
Why would anyone think conservatives would be dumb enough to shoot themselves in the foot like they have? MAGA really did a number on them.
I don't think so many people are stunned that anti-abortion became a political point amongst the conservative religious. I think they are surprised and shocked non religious conservatives were ineffective enough to continue squashing it like they have for the past several decades.
Nobody with half a brain wants this. Conservative or liberal. Your have to be an absolute fool to want this.
